Re: Wipe-on Poly. Is it usable?
Karl when wet sanding with it, are you using the oil base finish as the water for the paper? Just trying to figure out the technique? Also what finish are you top costing it with? Also are there different types of finishes that are ok over an oil base finish?

Re: Wipe-on Poly. Is it usable?
I use Minwax rubbing polyurethane (or home-made wiping poly...... which is essentially polyurethane thinned down with mineral spirits) a lot on electric guitars and basses. I teach guitar building at a high school on Cape Cod and this is the finish we use for all our builds: acoustic and electric. ...

What part of the guitar are you using this stuff on and can you post a pic of the finished product?

Re: BEST way to repair Nitro finish?
Just to give an update. The repair came out great and you cannot tell it ever happened. I just dropped filled the spot with a Q-tip a few times and let sit for a week sanded back. I had just a little spot left, so I added more Nitro to it and let it sit for another week. Sanded and buffed out to a p...

Wipe-on Poly. Is it usable?
I was just thinking about an alternative finish to gunstock oil finish for a all maple neck. I saw the wipe-on Poly and was wondering if anyone has tried this stuff before? If so what were the results, Clear or amber, tough or soft, good against climent changes? I was just thinking for a bass I am b...

Re: BEST way to repair Nitro finish?
Either way should work equally well. If it ever happens again, don't wipe it off! It's relatively easy to scrape off the little bumps of CA, much easier than filling low spots. You usually end up needing to scrape after drop fills anyway, so not wiping saves you a step. DAMHIKT On nitro lacquer I w...

Re: Did I just make some firewood?
My favorite way of heating frets is with a modified soldering iron. I use a pistol-grip type, these are high wattage and they have a tip that is replaceable and screws to the gun at two points. Cut off the end of the tip, and spread it apart so that it will touch a fret near each end. Now, when you...

BEST way to repair Nitro finish?
I was installing a pre-amp into a bass I built and when drilling the hole for a selector switch, the bit chipped the finish. So I took some CA to drop around the chip. When I did this there must have been an air bubble in the bottle of CA and it shot some onto another part of the body and when I not...

Re: Help me design a bass for slapping
If you are still wanting to build a slap bass just use the norm maple neck and maple or ebony fingerboard and if you are doing a neck through or set neck then use a maple center block. Make wings out of what ever you want. Make sure you place the pickups in the right spot center position and back to...

Re: Blend pot issue, need help!
David do you know if you can do a push pull switch with the Bart electronics. I know you mentioned in another thread I had about these electronics that they cannot be hooked up to be active/passive? If I was to do this would it give a big pop sound when switching if at all?

Re: Blend pot issue, need help!
Well I got the ground and hot wire switched and what do you know it works like a charm. Also I have the volume and blend pots wired correctly green going to volume and yellow to blend. So no need to switch them. The only thing I did need to do with this blend pot was to ground the ground lug to the ...

Re: Help me design a bass for slapping
I may end up building two, as an experiment. :) One: maple neck/centerblock Two: pure port orford cypress I'll try to use the same hardware for both--hipshot bridge and tuners (my wallet is crying). I'm seriously tempted to use Gotoh's instead. I think the Gotoh stuff is of good quality. I have use...

Re: Paul Rhoney's Latest Builds
What's the news on the Ash top. I finally got the pickups, but I still have some other hardware to get. It ought to be done within a month or so. I'm crossing my fingers that I get to keep that one for myself. Lol. Now you are sounding like me wanting to keep everything for your self. So glad to se...

Re: Blend pot issue, need help!
Once again you amaze me with the amount of knowledge you have and the kindness to share is even better. I will give it a try on switching the ground and hot on the Blend pot. Also you mention the Pre and post eqing Green and yellow wires. I have the yellow going to the Volume and green to Blend. Do ...

Re: Blend pot issue, need help!
The brand of blend pot is "ALPR" (?) This is what it looks like to me on the side. It is not an ALPHA. I think everything is working ok now. I played the bass last night and everything seems to be working ok. I do not like having a pot and switch and batteries hanging out of it but it is w...

Re: Blend pot issue, need help!
Well last night I went back and took out the stacked pot and put back in the original 50k pots and I also noticed the blend pot had a bad connection. So I re-soldered the blend pot and what do you know the bass sounds just about perfect now. After doing this I did notice some ground issues when toug...

I forgot to ask about the barrel jack. If you switch two lugs will it still work or will you know it is not working?

Re: Blend pot issue, need help!
Barrel jacks not only suck, they are also really easy to mix up the ring and the tip connections on if you don't test with a meter. A 14 year-old NTMB may well be the previous version which is the NTMB-18 as opposed to the NTMB-918 which is the current iteration. The battery connections are differe...
