The inside of the pickup cavities is so rough, the copper tape doesn't stick very well (this is a stock body; I didn't route the cavities). Thanks for the replies. It almost seems that a guitar could be retrofitted with an octave D. It would be right up the middle . On the two guitars I'm looking at now, there would be room on the headstock for another tuner. The bridge would be the issue.

So I remember Martin (I think) made a Roger McGuinn 7 string model with an additional G string an octave above. I play in the key of D a lot. A screw up....I was mounting a Wilkinson 3 saddle compensated tele bridge, the one without the tele pickup slot, in my walnut tele-deluxe type thing, and I broke two!! of the mounting screws. I guess the pilot holes weren't big enough, and yeah the walnut is pretty hard, but man the screws seem weak...

Thanks. I have been going for light coats, and doing one first thing in the morning and one at night. I will try buffing it down, then a few more light coats.

The back of the neck looks good, just the flat spots on the front and back of the headstock are streaky.

I guess I should add I wiped with mineral spirits between grits.
