Re: Resonator plans ?

Freeman, Thanks, those pictures help. Yours is a beauty too ! What kind of wood is that ? There's lots that I don't know. Looking at those Stewmac plans with no side view and no depth dimensions left me with more questions than answers. I've ordered a book through Amazon on resonators. I'm not going...

Resonator plans ?

Can anyone point me to a wood bodied resonator plan that they like. I'd like to try one of those as my next project.
Thanks.

Re: Follow-up to "100 mile guitar" thread

John; Yes, the fretboard is Cherry too, that particular piece didn't darken as much as some of the others did when the wod finish (true Oil)was applied, I don't know why. Jason; Yes, I find the Cherry very pretty too. Not as hard as some might like. That particular log was pretty small - about 10&qu...

Follow-up to "100 mile guitar" thread

So, this is what I built, after starting the "100 mile guitar" thread. All the wood is from within 100 miles of my home. Its all Cherry (from my front yard) with a Western Red Cedar top. First guitar I've built, I can't even play (though I am trying). I made lots of mistakes but I'm still ...

Re: Installing frets before gluing down the fretboard ?

I've done mine now and it worked fine (as far as I know anyway).
I used .062 stainless register pins (Tig welding filler rod). Installed the frets over them.

Pinless Bridge ?

So, what's the conventional wisedom re: pinless bridges (Like Ovation uses) ? A friend of mine plays an Ovation and it seems nice to me. (and after launching a pin across the living room on a re-string I started to think I liked the idea). Do they use a concealed pin on the back of the bridge, or is...

Implications of humidity ?

First timer here, getting towards the end of my first build. Body and neck done but not glued together yet, fret board not glued on yet. I'm located in the interior of British Columbia, R.H. in winter is 70 ~ 100%, Summer, 50 ~75%, occasionally dropping into the 40's. I have no humidity controls in ...

Re: Installing frets before gluing down the fretboard ?

Thanks, that's re-assuring.
Yes, I can see where register pins would let you trim everything right up close.
I might just give that a try !

Installing frets before gluing down the fretboard ?

Building my first guitar following J. Kinkead's book, he mentions that some (not him) prefer to install frets before gluing down the fret board. I hadn't thought of that but I must admit that the idea is somewhat attractive to me - I don't like the idea of hammering frets home over the body. I can i...

Scale length question

Hi there; So, I'm building my first guitar from Johnathan Kinkead's book. I'm getting ready to cut fret slots. I'm thinking I'll make a jig similar to the Stewmac or Lmi ones to use in my milling machine W/Digital readout (.0000" resolution) but without a template, using the DRO to feed it over...

Re: Routing the edges of the top/back

I'm a newb, in much the same position as you. I trimmed the overhang on my top and back last week. I had the same concerns as you------- too much time invested to have a disaster now ! --- but I've never done this before ! I had some spare wood and did a "mock up" of a section of a bent si...

Re: 100 mile guitar - what woods to use?

Thanks Mark; I'm just getting started here, building moulds, go-bar jig, ordering some parts / tools etc. I'm gonna start with the Cedar top and see how that goes, try bending some cedar sides, if nothing else but to get some experience and see how that goes. If its going well with the Cedar, I'll c...

Re: 100 mile guitar - what woods to use?

Oyvind Taraldsen; Thanks so much for the name, a little google search and voila: http://benedettoguitars.com/boutique/sinfonietta-western-red-cedar/ So , it has been done, that makes me feel much better. Mine will never approach the beauty of that one but at least now I know that I'm not completely ...

Re: 100 mile guitar - what woods to use?

Thomas W. Felty; I would be interested to hear how your guitar W/ Yellow Cedar sides and back stood up to use and what was your impression of the sound ? Presumably, it hasn't fallen apart ? I've used Yellow Cedar before and I would say that its somewhat harder / stronger than WRC but not alot. I ha...

Re: 100 mile guitar ??

Mark; No, he doesn't mention WRC for sides or back but what caught my attention were his comments that "traditional" wood choices may have as much to do with the fact that many of the famous mfr's had used them and a mfr's choices may have been based as much in availability and supply conc...

Rod; I'm in Salmon Arm, - steel string acoustic Here's a link to an interesting article on alternative woods http://www.lmii.com/carttwo/alttonewoods.asp This was the article that got me thinking that Cedar sides and back might be OK. This and photos from the old forum of a guitar made by a fellow f...

Re: 100 mile guitar ??

I'm kinda wondering what it would sound like W/ WRC sides and back as well as top ? I do like a deeper, richer tone but would all WRC body be too much maybe ? Iknow .... depends :D No doubt the back and sides will be more easily marked but I like a bit of "patina" that says its been used. ...

100 mile guitar - what woods to use?

Hi there; I’m completely new to this guitar stuff. 60 years old and trying to learn to play – but that’s another story. I’m located in BC, Canada, have my own sawmill and thinking about trying to build an acoustic guitar. I have some nice edge grain Western Red Cedar that I sawed myself and is curre...
