Inlay Question
I have been using a Scroll "S" as an inlay on my headstocks. See attached pictures. I have been having trouble with the S breaking. After routing the channel, I do a test fit and route more where needed, then do another test fit until the inlay just fits in the channel. Then, what I've bee...

Re: Truss rod
Forgot to mention that I also removed the wood spline above the truss rod the same way. New truss rod on the way. The right one this time. Ha. Lesson learned...until the next "learning opportunity" ...er mistake. Ha.

Re: Truss rod
Got it off with a clothes iron. Used the grill cooking thermometer to set the temp to 250 F, left the iron on the fingerboard for two minutes. Worked a sharpened slightly sharpened putty knife under the end for a small distance. Repeated in small increments ...and off it came! Much easier than I had...

Re: Truss rod
It is adjustable through the soundhole. I will remove it and put the right one in. Thanks for the help.

Re: Truss rod
It was a hot rod truss rod. 12 1/4 in. Supposed to be 14 1/4. I've already glued the fingerboard on but haven't fretted it yet.

Truss rod
What are the consequences of using a truss rod designed for a 12 fret guitar in a 14 fret guitar? Not that I would know anybody who has done such a dumb thing.

.62mm wide rosette channel
I am wanting to do a D18 style rosette. The outer and inner rings are .62mm wide. How on earth do you guys route/cut a channel that small?
Thanks,
Danny

Book on Building with Domed Top
Can anyone recommend a book that covers building acoustics with a domed top in a radiused dish? And specifically covers setting the neck angle and being able to get the fingerboard extension flat with the rest of the fingerboard with this method?
Thanks,
Danny
Thanks,
Danny

Re: Repairing Scratches in French Polished Top
Waddy, Thanks. I'm trying to learn about two issues actually. 1)Issue one is the scratches on the top after the guitar is finished. I think I understand your method but see the question below. 2) My second issue is white specks of pumice in this guitar back (walnut). Do I understand that you actuall...

Re: Repairing Scratches in French Polished Top
Steve, This is on already finished guitars. No problem with initial finish that I know of. I followed the Milburn method. Scratches are only in the finish..not through to the wood. I have had trouble getting the pumice to wet out in the past...even using only alcohol. The only thing I can think that...

Repairing Scratches in French Polished Top
I'm sure that this has been covered before but I can't find it searching for "repairing french polish". I've done 4 guitars, all french polished and, for the life of me, can't seem to get one finished without putting some scratches in the top. I read in a lot of places that french polish i...

Re: Bridge moved during gluing
Mark, Bob and Peter, Thanks you very much!. I did use the sharpened putty knife upside down - should have had the beveled side down toward the top. I should have heated the aluminum block more times. I also have learned that I pushed the putty knife from the wrong side (considering the grain runout ...

Re: Bridge moved during gluing
Thanks for all the info. I made an aluminum block and ground a gradual sharp end to a flexible putty knife (see picture). Wasn't sure about this next part but heated the aluminum block in the oven at 350 then used it and the putty knife to slowly get it off. In retrospect I don't think I got the glu...

Re: Bridge moved during gluing
Additional info: The 1.5 mm shift on the bass side and .5mm shift on the treble side as described above is measured from the fret at the body joint to the corner of the bridge. I believe that the actual linear distance would be a little less.

Bridge moved during gluing
During gluing the bridge on my number 4 guitar I did a stupid thing. In retrospect I believe that tightening the clamp caused the bridge to rotate and I didn't notice it until the glue was already dry. (see photo) I'm looking for recommendations. Here is the info: The top is cedar and has been frenc...

Re: Bearclaw on the hoof?
Forrester buddy of mine had the following comment: Vines trellised up the tree, engulfing the tree. Pressure from the strangling vines increased to the point that the tree formed reaction wood ridges. This compression of the tree's cambial tissue caused the tree to slowly die from strangulation. He ...
